Biography
Avital Oz, born in kibbutz Mishmar Ha'emek, September 12, 1942. ( In what was Palestine then) Raised, educated and served in Israel.
Avital started expressing himself through various art mediums from an early age. He has put his artistic involvement in service of the kibbutz's community, realizing stage design, wall painting, and holidays decorations as needs directed.
Upon completing his military service Oz returned to life and work in his birth place, while enrolling in "Avni Institute for Fine Arts" in Tel Aviv, studying drawing, painting and graphic arts.
In 1967 Avital leaves Israel to study Fresco and mural painting in the "Academy of Fine Art" (part of U.N.A.M.) in Mexico city. Siquaros, the last of the three triumviers (Orozko and Rivera) is still alive and practicing there. During that year of studying and intensively working in various medium of painting and graphic arts, Oz lands his first one person show of painting and etching which evolves from and deals with the Mexican people, landscape, the bullfight ring and other issues.
1968 finds Avital Oz moving to the USA where he is continuing his art education. First, at the "School of Visual arts" in NYC, NY, where he's deepening his interest and involvement in three dimensional art- sculpture!
Oz is being accepted and attends "Yale university school of Art/Architecture" New Haven, Conn, completing his M.F.A. in 1973. Cupping this intensive period of studies and work, with a public commission: "Step Forward"; relating and standing in sinch with the late Charles Moore refinement of structure, part of New Haven renewal at the time.
Packing his few belongings (mostly tools) Oz is driving down to NYC, finds a studio, continuing his artistic involvement as a sculptor mostly - but not only.
Since 1974 Avital is showing his work regularly in "O.K. Harris" Soho, NYC, NY, as well as participation in international sculpture's symposiums world wide.
Public and private commissions have materialized simultaneously with periods of teaching at "Parson School of Design" , "The New School" NY, NY, as well as guest lectures in universities outside the USA.
Today, with many one man shows, sculptures at various locations in the USA and world wide, Avital is continuing his intensive efforts as ever, dividing his time between the Americas, Europe, Israel and others, in enriching human perception and joys via the visual arts experience.
